Mystery shoppers are a little bit of a mystery. They appear without warning or announcement. The good ones you’re not even sure who they are, what they saw, what they thought, or what it means, unless you’re privy to their report on the other side. So it would seem, a good question to ask, to start, may be WHERE do I find one of these guys?

As with so much else these days, one of the first places I’d tell you to look is the internet. The World Wide Web has given us a wealth of information for our business or personal lives at the click of a mouse. It is really that ridiculously easy to locate…well… ANYTHING! But just because it is there doesn’t mean its right for you or what you are doing.

If you’re looking on the web be careful to check out things like testimonials, length of time they’ve been in business, and links with other sites to help you decode this mystery. If you can email a business they’ve worked for in the past; even call a business you can locate in your area; it greatly helps the process.

You should also check and see if they’re licensed with the Better Business Bureau. BBB ratings are very helpful because they are an impartial third party who can give you unfiltered information and a look at their foibles and triumphs. BBB also has the benefit of being such a long standing organization; they are something of an institution. They act with the government, on behalf of the consumer. So unless you are conspiratorial in nature, this should put you something at ease.

Maybe this taking a step back but another place you might find helpful to look is the yellow pages. If they had a phone BEFORE they had the internet, you can be more confident of their longevity. Now, longevity isn’t really saying all that much of anything, besides here we are; we’ve been here for X-number of years; and this is the record we can stand up on. And that is something to take note of. You’re sure your shopper isn’t some crazy kid in his bedroom or something worse.

Another place to go is to individual business. Surely you must know people in your same or similar fields of work. What have they done about their secret shopper needs? where have they gone to procure mystery shoppers? What suggestions might they have for you and your store? It’s often the horror stories that end up with the longest shelf life, those are the names they remember, and this is the help you need in evaluating potential shoppers.

In the end though, it’s really all about guy intuition. You should try and meet the secret shopper before hiring them; have them talk to you and tell you why they should work for you. They’re providing a service and they should know all sorts of reasons why they should be your employee.

If not, you might want to consider replacing that employee.
