What Should You Ask When Relocation Goes With The Job

If you got accepted for a new job or are promoted in the company, one of the things you may have to do is move. If you don’t mind moving, here are a few things you should ask to see if this is included in the relocation package.

First, does the relocation package include transferring not only your personal belongings but also your car as well? While some have this and there are those who don’t. You should know that in some cases, there are restrictions to how much they are willing to pay for it.

Since you are new to the neighborhood and don’t know anybody there, it will be nice to know if your employer can recommend some childcare assistance especially if you have kids. The same goes if your parents live with you and you want to live close to them. It would help a lot if your employer has a list of nursing home or care centers.

This way, you don’t have to worry about the concerns at home when you are transferred or accepted for this post.

Some employers do not assist at all but only give you a set of budget for your relocation. If this is the case, you have to do the legwork yourself of finding a mover. The best mover to get is someone who can pack your goods and then unload them in your new home. Some will even put it already just the way you like it so you don’t have to unpack and do the remodeling yourself.

Should your employer tell you that you will have to find a new place to stay; you should probably visit your future city first and then go house hunting. This will enable you to find something that suits your budget and make it easy for the movers to transfer your items from the old one to the new one.

Since your house hunting might last a few days or even a week, find out from your employer if they are willing to pay for your hotel where you will be staying in. If during the trip you have not found a suitable place, see if they can provide suitable housing first which should probably include some basic furniture.

Relocation does not happen only within the United States but also across the globe. If ever you are moving to Asia or Europe, you should find out if your employer is going to give you some cultural training so you don’t make a fool of yourself once you get there.

If the assignment will let you stay in a foreign country for 6 months or even a year, you should ask if your family will be allowed to come along. Since your papers were probably prepared first, your family might be following a short time later so you should also find out if you will be given airfare to travel back and see them.

The relocation package given by one company is different from another. By asking these tough questions, you will know what you are getting yourself into before you decide to take the job or not. You should remember that relocating somewhere else is a new beginning especially when you leave your friends and neighbors behind.
