Weight Loss – Can A Low Fat Dessert Be A Good Dessert

Now that’s an age old question. So can a low fat dessert be a good dessert?

Well in my opinion no meal is ever complete unless there is dessert involved in the plan. Low Fat Dessert

Yes, we’ve all heard it time and time again. You must resist.

The majority of desserts are bad for you and must be avoided at all costs. Loaded with salt, sugar and or fat, desserts totally fill the bill of those of us addicted to the sweet delights and junk food comfort that desserts bring.

There’s a school of thought on this issue for America as a whole.

When a group of people experience wealth and success, their diets begin to change right along with their bank accounts. Sounds silly I know, but think about it for a minute. When money is no worry and you can go to the grocery store with not a care in the world, then you have a much greater choice of what you will eat.

So given a choice, many of us will naturally head towards, the fattier, rich and more processed foods. Is it because like the animal kingdom we subconsciously gear up for the winter and these foods are perfect for storing up the fat we need to keep us warm.

Or is it that we are simply a greedy bunch?

We just want the very best of everything. We want it all as a society. We want the new car, the new house and the richest foods we can afford. Ok, before you get totally insulted and stop reading, just think about it for a minute. Historically, the wealthy have always eaten vastly different foods that those who are less fortunate.

So what is the right answer?

You want to enjoy a decadent dessert following your mean but you certainly don’t want the extra weight gain that can go along with that choice. So, can you have your cake and eat it too? Perhaps you can.

Are there some healthy desserts that you can enjoy without feeling so totally guilty that all the pleasure is gone from the dessert before you’ve had that first bite? Let’s talk about some of the more healthy desserts that you can eat.

To start with forget the low fat stuff.

For my dessert, it’s just not worth the time or money. I don’t think the taste is worth it plus you risk the chance of eating twice as much of it just to fill your cravings. Why? Simply because low fat desserts are missing something… the fat… the one thing that you are craving the most. In the end you aren’t really doing yourself any favors. You are falling in the trap that many fat people fall into. You think it is ok to eat twice as much because it is low fat but that is not the case at all especially if you want to lose weight.

Fresh fruit is always a good dessert.

It’s a cinch to prepare it easily and it tastes great especially when it is in season. Take a few minutes when you are shopping and find that fruit that is perfectly ripe and ready to eat.

How about a baked apple with a sprinkle of cinnamon? Or how about bananas sliced in orange juice. The sweet tangy flavor of the orange juice is really different compared to the banana. It is also a great pick me up if you are feeling sluggish.

If you own a wand mixers, you know, the handheld mixers that you can lower down into a tall glass, these are perfect for mixing up great healthy desserts.

For example, using your wand mixer, take ice cold skim milk and put it in a drinking glass. Use your wand mixer to whip air into it. After awhile it kind of looks like whipped cream. Add some bananas and strawberries and a little pinch of sugar to make it sweet. Yummy! This is very low fat and it tastes great. The sweetness of the fruit will give you taste of sweetness you’ve been craving and the whipped action makes it taste a little naughty. By whipping the skim milk, it almost tastes like the real thing. It’s a great substitute.

You can also use this base mix to add some zing to all kinds of things. You can use it to make your low fat milkshakes. You can add your protein mix to this for a great meal with very little fat. You will be surprised at how many things you can do with this whipped topping. People will think that you have fallen off of your rocker when they think you are eating a big serving of whipped cream.

Another great healthy dessert option is gelatin.

Make sure that you get the unflavored kind. It will come in either envelopes or in sheets. Following the packages directions, you can add fruit juice or you can add fresh fruit to your gelatin and get a satisfying dessert. If you have a wand mixer, you can use it and add some of that whipped topping you make from the skim milk. Again, there’s no need to feel deprived and like you have to live without dessert, just look for other options.

If you take the time to think about your favorite dessert, and then think about making small changes that will make that favorite a little healthier then you can enjoy the good stuff more often. Really now, isn’t life too short to be skipping out on dessert!
