Visualization Wins Bubba The Green Jacket

Bubba got off the course at the Masters and he said “I just got into the trees, saw a crazy shot in my head, and now I’m wearing the Green Jacket”. Thank goodness for his ability to visualize.

There’s also been talk recently about Ernie Els employing a visualization coach. The fact is that to be able to create a shot you have to first be able to see it.

I sat in on a golf mind training session in a country club a week or so back and one of the questions asked at the end was “So, do the professionals really use this stuff?” I guess that sums up the average amateur club golfers attitude towards the mental side of golf. They don’t really get it.

If those golfers did get it they would find golf is a far easier and more satisfying game than that which they currently experience. The mental side is actually easy to learn, easy to practice and easy to use. It is, in fact, a whole lot easier than learning to swing a golf club in an optimal manner and create the many different shots that good golf requires of us.

Visualization is a key part of shot creation. Visualization is important in the learning of the swing itself. You need to see the correct swing path in your minds eye so as to be able to replicate it.

Visualization then comes into play once again in the choosing of a shot. You have to see where you want the ball to go. You have to see where you want it to land, the height you want it to fly, the way the ball will respond when it lands. Only once you have seen your shot are you able to choose your club and practice the necessary swing.

You often hear the phrase “You have to see it to believe it”. In golf, visualizing the shot and swing clearly in your minds eye allows you to believe it and then to actually do it. Visualization in a clear and precise manner such as this thus allows you to fully commit to your shot. And you know what happens when you don’t commit to your shot. If you hit your ball with an uncommitted poke it will treat it as a joke!

Thus visualization is the real skill that underpins the ability to choose the right swing, create the right swing and commit to it. It is the foundation upon which complete confidence is built.

Yes, I know confidence also comes from knowing that you have the ability to play the shot. You practice that on the range and in practice on the course. That’s the bit that amateur golfers are far more likely to do. But complete golf confidence requires more that just the ability to create those shots. It requires mental skill. It requires visualization.

Embracing the mental game of golf is what truly transforms your game. Its what sets you apart from the rest. It’s what wins you your equivalent of the green jacket in your local club.
