Radar Detector Technology Is Diverse
Law enforcement has a number of weapons in its arsenal to combat speeding. From laser technology to radar guns, they can and do clock cars to catch speeders. The use of clocking technology isn’t new, but it has come a long way during its history, making cases more and more difficult for motorists to fight in court.
A well calibrated radar or laser gun practically closes the case for law enforcement when a motorists tries to fight a ticket in court. With technology constantly on the advance, law enforcement’s tools have gotten better and, inasmuch, the ability for a motorist to get out of a ticket by going to court has lessened. There’s no more guess work if the electronic equipment the police are using is in proper working order.
To help avoid a ticket situation entirely, many drivers have turned to the use of radar detectors to let them know when someone might be watching speeds. These devices are pretty handy for reading the air “waves” to see what’s out there and let motorists know they might want to slow down or face a costly ticket.
There are a number of different technologies employed by law enforcement to help them clock speeds. So it is also so there are a number of different technologies available to help motorists avoid getting caught by law enforcement when they’re creeping up past the posted speed limit.
Here are the basic types of detectors:
Radar detector: In its purest form, this type of detector can read the “air” to see if law enforcement is using radio waves to clock speeds. These operate by reading the frequencies law enforcement uses to clock speeds, such as the X, K and Ka band. The Ka band is the most commonly used by police who use radar right now.
Radar jammers: Rather than “detect” these devices block radio transmissions and make it impossible for law enforcement’s radars to gain a Doppler shift reading. Sounds like a great idea, but since the FCC regulates radio transmissions, the use of one of these nifty devices is banned by federal law.
Laser detectors: These are available and can tell if the infrared beam of a law enforcement officer’s laser gun is being used in the area. There are some types that combine both radar and laser detection into a single unit.
Laser jammers: These reportedly make it impossible for a laser gun to get a reading. They are not regulated by the FCC and they are considered legal in most places. It can’t hurt to check local laws though. Reliability reports on these vary, so checking out reviews is a good idea before buying a particular make or model.
Using a radar detector can help give a motorist and edge to avoid a ticket. These devices have come a long way since their first use and are no longer, clunky and cumbersome. The reliability of the technology to detect varies from model to model and can even be impacted by what law enforcement is using to clock speeds. However, despite some shortcomings, most detection devices do serve their purpose, which is of course to level the playing field.
