A lot of people who want to learn NLP have no clue where to start. Some of them hit the books like grade-A students. Others attend week-long workshops somewhere. And some would purchase NLP home study courses online.
To each his own, I always say. After all, what matters most is that you have the drive and the desire to learn NLP. That alone is enough to get you through pretty much anything.
However, if youre not completely certain of how much you want to commit to NLP, then perhaps a little bit of enlightenment is in order.
What NLP Is
To learn NLP, its helpful to understand its origins first. NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It began in the 1970s when co-founders Richard Bandler and John Grinder decided to study the art of improving peoples lives.
It sounds a little too broad and a little too naive now, but nothing was off limits to the field of psychotherapy then. I suppose you could say that the 1970s was a very exciting time for ideologies like NLP. People were just discovering the power of change and self-improvement.
Over the decades, NLP techniques have been tweaked to suit the needs and wants of the human person. As a result, NLP now has a host of self-improvement methods under its belt.
From the simple art of anchoring (which involves the association of images and emotions) to the various techniques of rapport (which includes mirroring methods among others), NLP has something for almost every kind of situation.
How NLP Can Help You
If you want to learn NLP, you need to understand that its as good as undergoing a transformation.
If youve always been afraid of public speaking, for example, NLP will push you to take control of your fear. If you want to become a successful entrepreneur, NLP will help turn you into the kind of person who is a master at business negotiations.
To learn NLP might sound a little new age for some, but thats only because they havent been introduced to it yet. However, its not really as alien a concept as what some might be thinking.
NLP basically helps you take control of your life. It helps you see things in a different light. It helps you see you in a different light. And your perspective is what makes all the difference in the world.
