When it comes to the best beaches in the state of Florida, most vacationers will agree, Destin ranks at the very top. This community in North Florida, is a vacationer’s paradise for a number of reasons.

North Florida doesn’t typically capture the attention of tourists, but Destin is the exception to the rule. Considered part of Florida’s “Emerald Coast,” Destin is not only famous for its white beaches, but also the emerald colored waters that lap at the miles of sugar, soft sand. The city is near Pensacola and Panama City. It’s also in proximity to famous Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach.

Visitors to Destin will find a resort area that’s grown up around not only the beaches, but also some serious fishing action. Vacationers and professionals alike love the action that can be found in this Northern Florida town. Plus, the dolphin seem to like it, too, as schools are often spotted by boaters and even those on the shores. The region is also ideal for shell collecting.

Although there are other things to see and do in Destin, the community is known primarily for its beaches and water action. With more than 24 miles of coastline along the Gulf, the community takes great pride in those beaches. So much pride, in fact, steps have been taken to preserve the pristine nature of about 60 percent of Destin’s beachfront property. Destin has earned the title for having the Number One Beach in the South and was named in the Top 5 of Favorite Family Vacation Destinations by readers of Southern Living magazine for eight years in a row.

In addition to the beaches, visitors here will find upscale resorts, tons of fishing action and some of the best golfing in the state. Museums include the U.S. Air Force Armament Museum, the Indian Temple Mound Museum and The Focus Center, a hands-on science museum.

Nearby visitors will find a zoo in Gulf Breeze, Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna and more. Plus there are more than 400 restaurants, many of which feature fresh catches, in the general vicinity of Destin. Going hungry isn’t an option.

A community that thrives on a laid-back beach atmosphere, Destin is one of the top tourist destinations in the south for a number of reasons. Convenient to all of North Florida’s major attractions, plus Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, Destin is ideal for family treks or couple’s getaways.
