What is happiness? And why are some people generally happy and others not? It would be wonderful if there was a “happiness pill” which everyone could get on subscription. Now that would be nice and easy; just pop a pill each morning and be assured of a sunny disposition for the rest of the day.
At this very moment I am sitting in an airport watching people come and go, and couldn’t help but notice the varied expressions and body language. Some people are smiling, but the majority are looking rather harassed and fed up, to put it mildly. It is clear that every person has their own particular disposition, their own “set-point” in the way in which they view their world. And, on top of that, we have certain things which serve as triggers to change our moods, which have built up over the years as a result of life experiences. As well as this, we are all affected by the moods and dispositions of the people around us.
How can one foster a sunny disposition and create your own “happiness pill”? It’s clear when you look around you that neither money nor success are tickets which guarantee happiness. Think for a moment about what makes YOU happy. Perhaps it’s your dog when he looks up at you with soft brown eyes, or your baby’s face whilst sleeping, or the smell of roses, or listening to music, going for a walk, sitting in the sunshine, climbing trees, dancing…what “floats your boat”? Even as you think about the things which make you happy, just for a moment, do you notice how you find yourself smiling, how your limbs soften and relax?
Surely, therefore, your mind is your very own happiness pill. All your mind requires is direction and focus. As your mind focuses on things or events which are “nice” and “sunny” in your view of the world, an instantaneous response is felt throughout your physiology, a response which involves neuro-transmitters and hormones; endorphins are released, and messages are sent to each cell in your body which instigate relaxation, enjoyment and all those other sensations which you associate with happiness.
Unfortunately, most people do not take the trouble to focus their mind on such things. Instead one can see an almost country-wide propensity (in the western world) to dwell on the negative as opposed to the positive, resulting in a damp and dreary attitude. In my experience, this is not a conscious choice which people make; rather, it is not realizing that one can choose their thoughts and in this way change their mood which is the central issue.
