Pets on Your Houseboat
Most families own some type of pet, whether it be a dog or cat, because of the company and relationship it brings. Many hotels and vacation spots do not allow pets in their rooms because of the potential for accidents, damage and messy clean up However, many marinas do allow you to bring your pets with you on rental houseboats. If you are unable to kennel or leave your pets, this could be an option for you!
Bringing your pet with you on vacation can be a great way for them to feel as part of the family. Remember that it is your responsibility to keep the pet quiet at night and to make sure it does not have accidents inside the houseboat. Most marinas will charge you a deposit if you bring your dog or cat with you. This fee is to cover the costs for cleaning the houseboat once your rental is up.
Some families choose not to bring pets because it may create more problems than it is worth. If you want to go to a museum or restaurant, then you have no place to keep your dog or cat safe. Allowing them to roam free in the houseboat unattended should not be considered an option If your pet would happen to damage the houseboat while you were away, then you could lose your entire security deposit. Whenever you take your dog or cat on shore make sure you clean up after them as a courtesy to other boaters. Never allow them to get into other people’s houseboats or camping areas. This could annoy other vacationers, so always keep your pet leashed or by your side.
Pets can be a great addition to your houseboat vacation. Keeping them safe should be your first concern. After all a dog or cat could easily become lost since the area is unfamiliar to them. Losing your pet could be rather devastating to you and your children. It is usually best to have them kenneled for the duration of your vacation, so you do not have to worry about keeping them from danger.
Taking your pets with you on a houseboat vacation could be a great idea for those that have a trained and well behaved dog or cat. However, if your dog or cat becomes noisy or aggressive during your vacation this could cause problems for you and your neighboring boaters. If you have exotic pets, such as birds, turtles or reptiles, you should have someone watch those for you during your vacation.
