Meditation and Health

There are a number of health benefits that are documented on
the benefits of meditation:

1) Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn researched that chronic pain sufferers
could reduce their pain by at least 50 percent with effects
that remain even after completing his eight week program of
meditation.

2) Dr. Gregg Jacobs wrote a paper documenting a study with a
small group where over 75 percent of the people with sleep
disorders were able to fall asleep within half an hour once
they were trained in meditation techniques to relax their
minds and bodies.

3) Dr. Herbert Benson from Harvard Medical School has
documented that through the practice of meditation the heart
rate, blood pressure and respiratory speed slows down which
results in a positive brain wave response.

In the Dec 2005 Townsend newsletter a study was conducted
that analyzed hypertensive subjects. Individuals were
placed either in a transcendental meditation program or a
health education program. After six to nine months, the
transcendental meditation group showed a significant carotid
IMT drop based on ultrasound readings.

Though a small study, it is an interesting research topic to
see if stress can be reduced by meditation and how it can be
a tool for reversing atherosclerosis and other health
problems. Dr. Dean Ornish incorporates meditation into his
work with patients with heart disease and shows some nice
results.

The National instutite of health lists meditation as helpful
for coping with high blood pressure as well as anxiety and
stress problems. Younger people today are now exhibiting
high blood pressure results in their physical exams.

At a middle school in Georgia kids were divided into two
groups and put on a three month program of meditating ten
minutes a day. Their resting systolic blood pressure was
over three points lower than the group that didn’t meditate.
Some suggest that meditation be introduced into the school
systems as students often are stressed from a combination of
academic pressure, peer pressure , family situations and
sports competitions.
