Those are just a few of the numerous benefits to beginning, and sticking to, a fitness routine. But you can’t just jump headfirst into a rigorous training regimen. If you haven’t worked out in a while, or ever for that matter, you must ease your body into this new lifestyle. It’s also important to make it enjoyable so that you will continue and make it a long-term habit instead of a short-term fix.
Before beginning, be sure your proposed plan of action is approved by your doctor. No matter what medical conditions you may have, chances are you can work out in at least some fashion. Once you have clearance it is create some realistic and attainable goals, both short-term and long-term, for yourself. Whether you are looking to run a 5k, or simply walk up a flight of stairs without feeling winded, approach your new exercise program with caution. Those who start out too aggressively often give up because they are too tired, sore, or even injured.
A common step in a weight-loss or fitness journey is to join a gym. While the gym can be an intimidating place, it doesn’t have to be. Many gyms offer a session or two with a trainer to teach you how to use the various machines using proper form. There are also many classes to choose from, if you prefer the motivation and push found in a group workout atmosphere. Choose a gym close to your house or workplace. If it is out of your way, you’re less likely to go regularly. And be sure to visit the gym and check out the atmosphere before signing any contracts.
But you do not have to join a gym to get in a good workout. There are literally hundreds of dvds that can be done at home, with or without additional equipment. From yoga to kickboxing, there’s a workout dvd out there to suit your wants and needs. Ask friends for suggestions and read reviews online before deciding on one so that you won’t waste money on a dvd you end up not liking. There are plenty of equipment options as well that you can purchase for in-home use. Fold-up treadmills are popular for those with small spaces. For other cardio options, look into elliptical trainers or stationary bikes.
Remember that no matter how hard you workout, it will all be done in vain if you do not clean up your eating habits as well. You do not have to become ridiculously strict and never allow yourself a treat. But you should assess your body’s daily calorie needs and monitor to make sure you stay around that number. A great way to keep track of your intake is by writing all you eat in a food journal. Calories can sneak up on you in unexpected places, so be sure you are writing down everything you put in your mouth. Most foods are alright in moderation, so long as you are eating healthy, balanced meals the majority of the time.
However you decide to go about your fitness endeavors, remember to keep things enjoyable. If you are not having fun, you are far more likely to just give-up. So switch it up often to keep your muscles guessing and your mind engaged. Increased physical activity will help you to lose weight, reduce the likelihood of various diseases, boost your confidence, and ultimately help you to live longer.
