Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can often lead to death. The allergy could be to just about anything from pollen to nuts. It causes great respiratory distress and can include symptoms as mild as minor hives to swelling in the throat that hinders breathing. When the US reflects on the tragic events of 9/11, as many poor souls that were lost and wounded, there were many more that required intense psychological first aid, similar to medical first aid, until professional help was available. As people watched buildings explode and people jumping out of multi story windows rather than burn to death, the emotional distress must have been not only unimaginable but also devastating. Some people just fell to the ground in a panic and could not even breathe. All of the paramedics were too busy to deal with something that may have seemed so trivial but to these people, psychological first aid was vital.

There are several places that offer First Aid Training Certification but likely the best recognized is the American Red Cross. You can be trained to not allow any time to lapse before you are able to help because in emergency situations time is more than precious. These courses will tech you how to handle an emergency situation until help arrives. Basically you should be trained in first aid, CPR, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course could be the difference between life and death.

One of the very first things that you will have been taught during first on the scene first aid training is that you should never attempt to rescue anyone if it endangers your life or the life of any bystanders. So if you happen to be first on the scene what you will have to do is designate someone to be the leader, someone who has first aid training, likely that person will be yourself. You will direct the entire rescue until help arrives.
