Looking the part Dressing like a bodyguard

Though every situation is different, there seems to be an official uniform for most bodyguards. A dark suit and sunglasses is typical for bodyguards that are seen on television and in the movies, but that is not always true for everyone. It simply depends on the situation, the occasion, the client and other factors. One very important characteristic of a good bodyguard is that he knows how to dress for each of these situations and still be able to perform any of the many necessary job functions.

Knowing your client can be very beneficial when trying to decide what to wear as their bodyguard. Perhaps the simplest decision is when one will be protecting a business professional or a CEO. This can be an easy situation to dress for because a suit and tie usually do suffice. Clients like these will want their bodyguard staff to blend in, and not stand out. For this reason, bright colors are to be avoided and dark ones worn.

A bodyguard may not always be so formal as to wear a suit all the time. For example, it wouldn’t exactly be a practical choice if you were accompanying a celebrity family to the beach for the day. That is not so say that the bodyguards should grab a Speedo and join in, but less casual would generally be ok for a situation like this. Just about any time a client is utilizing a bodyguard and going very casual, the bodyguard should be able to do the same. As much as I’d like to say that it is all in the name of fairness, it’s really not. Bodyguards need to look like they’re just one of the entourage. This keeps potential threats guessing as to where the defense will be coming from.

The President of the United States employs perhaps the best dressed bodyguards in the country. The Secret Service has attire for just about every occasion, and can vary from blue jeans to a tuxedo. They are masters at fitting into their surroundings. In fact, if not for their utter lack of expression and stern stature at all times, it might be hard to pick a serviceman out of a crowd. That is exactly the way a bodyguard should be represented. The United States Secret Service is in the business of protecting the President, but they still have an image to uphold. They make personal security look good.

Bodyguards need to know how to dress and present themselves at all times and in every possible situation. In addition to knowing what to wear and when, style should be a factor to consider too. A bodyguard represents more than just himself. He represents the client he is protecting, the agency he may work for and is constantly advertising for future jobs. Because image is so important for their clients, especially celebrities, it is very important that each and every member of their team or entourage looks like they belong there. A bodyguard has to know a lot of things about protection and self defense, but while you’re reading up on those, don’t forget to pick up a few fashion tips along the way.
