World Cup Trophy: Its Underlying History

Since then on from the 1930s World Cup, there had been two kinds of world cup trophies that had been awarded to the winners. There is the World Cup trophy itself or otherwise called the Coupe du Monde. Such was renamed by 1946 to give honor to Jules Rimet, the FIFA president who passed on the vote to pursue the competition in the year 1929. This world cup trophy was particularly designed by Abel Lafleur. Such object is nonetheless made up of the Gold plated Sterling Silver embedded on the Lapis Lazuli blue base. The height comes at 35 cm and the weight is at 3.8 kg. Its shape is octagonal too. There is some kind of a winged figure that stands for Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory as per the belief of the ancient Greeks.

During the World War II, the world cup trophy fell into the hands of the Italians through the leadership of Ottorino Barassi, the Italian FIFA Vice-President. He consequently hid it inside a shoebox right under his bed to shield it against the attacking Germans. But then prior to the celebration of the World Cup Finals in England in the year 1966, the world cup trophy was stolen during a public exhibition held at Westminster Central Hall. Seven days after, the world cup trophy was found totally wrapped by means of a newspaper at the Garden hedge in Norwood, which is in South London. The dog whose name was “Pickles” was said to have spotted it.

As a means of security measure, FIFA discreetly came up with a replica of the world cup trophy that was used during the post-match occasions up to the year 1970. By then so many replicas came about that auctions were held for it at about $425,015.

Now the second type is the FIFA World Cup Trophy and was creatively designed by none other than Silvio Gazzaniga. It comes with the height of 36 cm and with a weight of approximately 5kg. It is comprised of an 18carat solid gold with a base that is made up of two layers of Malachite with two human figures appearing to hold the Earth. This world cup trophy type was initially shown during the World Cup in the year 1974. The scenario now is that every time that one country wins the trophy, its name gets engraved at the world cup trophy’s bottom. The winner then gets to keep the original world cup trophy and has to keep it until the upcoming World Cup. After which, a replica is rendered to the winner and that could be kept for a lifetime.
