Used cameras are very popular with people who are looking for the right photography equipment at lower prices. Most used cameras are valued lower than what they would cost brand new. “Most” because not all used camera values are lower. Here are some factors that affect used camera values:
1) History – there are certain used cameras which are more expensive than the latest models because of their history. Some used cameras are valued higher because of the person who used them. A used camera’s value goes up if it known to have been used by a celebrity. There are also used cameras valued because of the fact that they have been used to capture history. People are willing to pay more if they know that the used camera they are buying has played a significant part in history.
There are also used cameras valued because of an odd event or story connected to the camera. The significance of the event or story depends on the person planning to buy the camera. Of course, there needs to be proof that the specific camera has an interesting history before you can market it as such.
2) Availability – there are certain used camera models which have become expensive simply because of the fact that there are fewer available in the market. The rarer the camera, the more expensive it is. Of course, the value of the used camera is lower than the brand new one. Most people find that brand new rare cameras are more appealing and thus more expensive.
3) Age – used camera values are affected by time. A camera slowly loses its value as time goes by. This is because they are replaced by cameras employing more advanced technology. However, it seems that after a certain period, cameras gain value again as they grow older. This is because those cameras have become part of history. When you are trying to appraise the value of a used camera, you should try to look up the model and its timeline.
Some used camera values are so low that they are practically free. This may be because of the fact that they worked in such a way that they cannot be used practically anymore.
4) Condition – Of course, the biggest factor that affects used camera values is the condition of the camera. When you are using a camera, it is inevitable that the equipment gets worn. The question is, how worn is it? People would be willing to pay less for cameras that don’t look brand new. It’s funny how people who go to used item stores keep looking for things that look brand new.
A good working used camera is valued generally at half its original price. Of course, if the camera looks cheaper, it is given a lower value. Some used cameras are valued at about 3/4 of the original price if they are in great working condition and have been used for only a few times. These used cameras may be traded in by people who found better models and wanted to upgrade in a hurry. Another reason for this high used camera value may be the fact that the seller had to perform some repairs and replace some parts in order to make the camera work again. In cases like these, it is often better to just buy brand new cameras.
